Given U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz's declared priority on the environment, it perhaps comes as no surprise that the Sierra Club of Hawaii has endorsed him over U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa.
Said Director Robert Harris in a press release Sunday (Sept. 1), “Senator Schatz is exactly the kind of clean energy leader Hawaii and America need. His commitment to homegrown, clean energy is second-to-none. Based on his lengthy background in working to protect Hawaii’s environment, we are confident he is the best choice to protect Hawaii families’ health, air and water, and build a clean energy economy that works for our state.”
Given the strengths of the Sierra Club’s strengths in mobilizing grassroots support and canvassing for candidates, the endorsement could help Schatz in a close U.S. Senate race. Just ask former state Rep. Pono Chong, who lost his redistricted seat to club-backed Rep. Jessica Wooley last summer.
