League of Women Voters to Obama: Do “What is Pono” on Climate Change
The League of Women Voters took out a full-paged newspaper ad today pressing Pres. Obama to act on climate change’s impact on the ‘aina. The ad comes on the heels of a letter the League sent to Pres. Obama as part of a larger campaign to push climate change to the forefront of policy.
The ad, published in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, references the latest report by the Pacific Islands Regional Climate Assessment (PIRCA), which warns of the negative impacts of climate change to which island communities are especially vulnerable. These include decreased freshwater supplies, rising sea levels, coral bleaching, and hotter temperatures, among others.
The ad ends with a call for the president to do “what is pono” and set standards for new and existing power plants under the Clean Air Act.
