Gov. Neil Abercrombie has selected Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz to assume Dan Inouye's U.S. Senate seat.
Schatz, 40, will serve through 2014, at which time the seat is up for re-election. He has already said he wants to stay in D.C. for a long time.
Schatz was chosen over U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa and DLNR Deputy Director Esther Kiaaina. All three names were selected by a committee of Hawaii Democrats Wednesday morning (Dec. 26).
The new Senate appointee plans to fly to Washington, D.C., tonight. (Perhaps he’ll hitch a ride on Air Force One, which leaves this evening) Inouye died Dec. 17 at the age of 88.
