9:43 p.m. — Hirono ‘Honored’ to Be Senate Nominee

Mazie Hirono, beaming in front of supporters and surrounded by family,  thanked the people who made her primary victory possible.

“My mother is at home watching — she truly shaped my life and my values,” said Hirono, clearly humbled and emotional by her win. “Mom, I know you are watching!”

Hirono said she was “honored” to be the Democratic Party’s nominee to the U.S. Senate. She also gave a shout-out to Sen. Dan Inouye.

“I can’t wait to join you,” she said.

And, Hirono took a dig at her general election opponent, Linda Lingle, and a party she says does not share “our values” on issues like tax cuts, Social Security and Medicare.

“Tonight I say to Linda Lingle, I say, ‘Let’s go — let’s talk about the issues!”
