Man Preps for Kayak Voyage From California to Hawaii

Kayaker Wave Vidmar is prepping for an unsupported, 3,100-mile journey from Sausalito to Hawaii. The journey is expected to last 45 to 65 days.
The New York Times has a nice update on his preparations, and details about the last time someone attempted a similar journey:
He will consume 5,500 calories a day of mainly freeze-dried food and upon completion will have paddled the equivalent of 120 marathons over 3,000 nautical miles in seas that could swell 50 feet, or 15 meters.
“This is comparable to nine consecutive ascents of Everest,” according to the staff helping him prepare. “This expedition will redefine what can be achieved with solo open ocean travel.”
