House Committee Defers Action on Internet Records Bill

After passionate testifying on both sides of the issue, House Economic Revitalization and Business Thursday morning deferred action on House Bill 2288which would require Internet service providers to keep track of what websites consumers visit and retain those records for no less than two years.

But Chair Angus McKelvey made clear that the Legislature takes cybercrime seriously. He asked Honolulu prosecutors to work with Internet Service Providers to make recommendations on legislation that would satisfy both law enforcement — which support HB 2288 — and privacy advocates — who oppose it.

Meanwhile, McKelvey said lawmakers would pay close attention to similar — and similarly controversial — legislation pending before the U.S. Congress.
